Look Good Feel Better PROGRAM

A free community service program to help women with cancer manage the psychological and visible side effects of chemotherapy and radiation

Facing Cancer with Confidence

The Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) program was founded in the United States in 1989 on the premise that helping people with cancer to look more like themselves helps them feel better.

They gathered several women undergoing cancer treatment and a few LGFB volunteers. They talked about how the impact of cancer treatment, seen on the outside, made them feel on the inside. How it shook their confidence. Their self-esteem. Their will. They discovered how by improving self-esteem, gives them the courage and confidence to cope with their disease and treatments.

In a recent global survey, 96% of the Look Good Feel Better workshop participants say that the workshop helped improve their self-image and that they experienced a 78% increase in self-esteem and confidence.

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy can have a dramatic effect on appearance and body image. Cancer treatment causes eyebrows, eyelashes and hair loss. Other distressing effects can include dry skin, puffiness, flushed or pale complexion.

The workshop helps female cancer patients improve their appearance and self-image through practical, hands-on experience. Women learn about skin care, nail care, ways to deal with hair loss, advice on headgear including wigs selection, turbans and scarves styling. It teaches technique to recreate their eyebrows with simple make up steps.

Participants also benefit from the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation. During the workshop, friendships and other support networks are formed that can be invaluable during their journey to recovery.

In Malaysia & Singapore, Look Good Feel Better workshops are run by Can-Care in collaboration with support groups, health care & beauty partners. It is a free community service program to help women with cancer manage the psychological and visible side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

Many survivors told us that the program has helped them regain a sense of control and normality at a time when diagnosis and treatment had taken over their lives.

“This program lifted my spirits. I didn’t know there’s so much I can do to make myself look good. I also made a lot of friends and it feels good sharing experience with other cancer survivors.” Mrs Tan, Malaysia
